The Green Mountain Trail, near the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve package is the result of farsighted vision and hard work by several individuals living around the Groenlandberg in the Overberg region of The Western Cape. A large conservancy has been created bordering on the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.

The trail is extremely varied, passing through wonderful fynbos, offering exquisite views, traversing vineyards, game farms and orchards. Not only is this a slack-packing trail in which the participants carry the bare minimum, but it is also a gastronomic and wine tasting experience hosted by local establishments featuring only local fare.

If you love good food, good wine, farm hospitality and a good walk, then the Green Mountain Trail is for you.

Day One: Porcupine Hills Guest farm near

The night prior to the start of the trail is spent at the remarkable Porcupine Hills Guest farm, which could be thought of as the restaurant at the end of the universe because one would not expect such a fine restaurant in the middle of the Bot River farms. A delicious laid-back dinner and wine tasting is provided here the night before the start of the trail.

The following day participants are transported by minibus and farm tractor to the starting point above an enormous apple farm. The first day is the longest – measuring 18 km through the Groenlandberg Nature Reserve near the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. The route follows a jeep track that makes for easy walking through diverse fynbos and offering incredible views in every direction. A picnic lunch is delivered to and enjoyed at the highest point of the walk. At the end of the day transport is provided back to Porcupine Hills.

Day Two: Paul Cluver Estate, snacks and a wine tasting. Close to the famous Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve

After a sumptuous breakfast return to yesterday’s ending point and start the walk, which winds along a historical road through timber forest for a short while before diverting into fynbos above the farmlands.

Enjoy a lunch of fresh farm fare on the edge of the vineyards before proceeding across the fields to Paul Cluver Estate for snacks and a wine tasting. Thereafter transported to Wildekrans Guest Cottage, a charming two-hundred year old converted home. Dinner and wine-tasting are enjoyed in the barn, which has been reinvented as a restaurant. Enjoy real farm hospitality and indulgence.

Day Three: Wildekrans Guest Cottage for a late lunch

Return to Paul Cluver Estate and walk across the farm, crossing through their private game park where you may be fortunate to see Zebra, Bontebok, Eland or other species. This area is famed for its healthy population of Blue Cranes – South Africa’s national bird. This walk passes dams and streams and offers excellent bird watching opportunities. The walk continues through a section of forestry land and back into the fynbos before descending right into Wildekrans Guest Cottage for a late lunch. The afternoon is leisurely, allowing one to absorb the beautiful garden and peace. Dinner and wine are taken in the barn again.

Day Four: Bot River, through the vineyards to end at Beaumont Wine Estate

After breakfast follow an historic road back into the hills. Today’s route takes one through fynbos and along the edge of a ravine, with magnificent rugged views. Eventually the town of Bot River comes into view and the walk proceeds through the vineyards to end at Beaumont Wine Estate. Here the participants are once again wined and lunched on delicious farm food and award-wining wines. What a way to end a really special four day trail!!!!

The rate of R 4 400.00 per person sharing (minimum of 4 people) includes: All accommodation (4 star), all meals including picnic lunches and lunch packs, transfers of luggage between overnight stops, transfers to the start of each day’s walk where required and from the end of each day’s walk where required, return transfers to Porcupine Hills at end of trail, trained guide every day. Includes all wine-tastings and wines with meals.

Rates for smaller groups available on request. All accommodation is on a sharing basis, but single accommodation can be provided at an additional rate.
